Couldn't Stand to Hurt

You remind me so much of a girl that I once knew
When I was just a couple of years older than you
I loved that lady dearly, but I let her slip away
Decisions I made long ago still haunt me to this day

     If sometimes I seem thoughtless
          Please don't think I don't care
Sometimes I speak before I think,
But this one thing I swear:
I could not try to hurt you,
I could not cause you pain,
'Cause it hurt like hell when I lost a friend
And I couldn't stand to lose one again.

You think that there's no way I can ever understand
But one day very long ago I stood near where you now stand
Ten years may have come and gone, but I'll not soon forget
Though dreams that I had long ago are fading from my head

The years put a glaze on the past
But some impressions always somehow last
Always, you will be here in my mind
The memories that I have of you will stand the test of time. . .
